I love palm trees and have had to practice quite a bit in order to capture a semblance of one. I’ve been procrastinating on this beauty for a number of years — based on a photo I took in LA.
Here’s a new watercolor based on a photo I took while driving along Massachusetts Avenue in DC a couple of years ago. It captures part of our capital’s essence. Painting it was an imperative.
I used a limited palette of 2 reds, 2 blues, and 2 yellows, plus black.
For day 2 of the challenge, I posted a more recent piece which includes some of those gorgeous pines(?) in downtown DC. I call it ‘Lighting a Candle’ . . .
A new art society was formed in the last year or so ~~ The Tonalist Society, which encourages and recognizes artists who work in a ‘tonalist’ style. As you can tell from earlier posts in this blog, I admire the work of Terry Miura and Marc Hanson who often paint in this style. I decided to enter two paintings in the first annual juried show. This is one of the two.

When I sent Marc his thank you drawing, I also sent another iPad thank you to Linda Rosetti, delightful owner of the charming Pink Rooster in Ocean Springs, MS. Ms Rosetti had hosted the workshop participants and Marc one evening after our plein air session for the day. Wild hair, paint-spattered clothes, sunburns and all.
In a surprise equivalent to Marc’s Instagram posting, Linda posted my image as the banner photo for the Rooster’s Facebook page. Again, the ‘likes’ were a heart-warming follow-on. Thanks, Linda!!

Of course we have to include Ocean Springs, when we’re talking Biloxi. And here’s a beauty right near the beach on Jackson Avenue. Thanks to my sister Susan for encouraging me to capture it in my iPad series.
Here’s another of my paintings to be featured at the Writers Center exhibit, opening in late June. A ‘plein air’ painting (done in the great outdoors) painted along S Street, NW, DC, in a workshop offered by Carol Rubin, another wonderful artist.

Hot white walls shimmering in the heat. Gleaming gold dome. Massive foreshortening complementing the bulbous domes. I know the perspective is distorted in my snapshot from our Cuba trip last year. But I like it that way. Had to paint it that way. More fun!
